"To see the world, things dangerous to come to…" Recognise this waterfall? It played the role of the Himalayas in one of my favourite films The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. This is the spot where Ben Stiller starts his trek to find Sean O’Connell (and the Ghost Cat). In reality, it’s Skógafoss in Iceland. Legend says the first Viking settler here buried a chest of gold behind the waterfall. We didn't find the gold, but seeing a double rainbow hit the black sand was probably worth more anyway. I think I just found the final boss of Scotland. 💀🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Hidden deep in Borgie Forest, there is a legend about "The Unknown." Most people drive the NC500 for the beaches and mountains, but if you take a detour into the woods, you stumble across this iron giant. It’s a sculpture by Kenny Hunter, designed to represent the "Monster" or the "Outcast" in Scottish folklore. The UK’s answer to Jurassic Park. 🌿🦖 ​ Stepping into Lud's Church doesn't feel like being in the Peak District. It feels like stepping back 10,000 years. ​This isn't actually a church—it's a massive natural chasm created by a landslip. The walls are over 15 metres high and constantly dripping, creating a micro-climate where moss covers everything and spiderwebs catch the few rays of light that make it down here. ​ History says this spot was the hiding place for Lollards (religious dissenters) in the 15th century. But it is most famous for being the likely setting of the Green Chapel in the Arthurian legend Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. ​ 📍 Location: Lud's Church, The Roaches, Staffordshire Difficulty: Moderate (The mud here is eternal – wear boots! The most deceptive beach in the UK. If you look at the water, you’d swear this was the Caribbean. If you dip your toe in, you are definitely reminded it’s the North of Scotland. ​This is Coral Beach (Claigan) on the Isle of Skye. ​ Despite the name, it’s not actually coral. The "sand" is made of dried, crushed white seaweed skeletons called Maerl. That’s what turns the water this incredible tropical blue when the sun comes out. ​A short 20-minute walk from the car park creates this view. It’s the discovery that launches the expedition to LV-223. ​Standing under the Old Man of Storr, you can see why they picked it. Even without the CGI, these rock formations feel ancient and full of secrets.
